BMW 1 Series F20 116D Stage 1 Remap North Somercotes

At DB Vehicle Electrics, we recently had the opportunity to remap a 2014 BMW 1 Series F20 116d equipped with a 2.0-litre diesel engine. While the 116d is marketed as an entry-level model, many drivers don’t realise that its engine is heavily detuned from the factory, meaning it has far more potential than its stock power output suggests. By optimising the ECU, we were able to unlock an additional 74bhp and 140Nm of torque, transforming this small diesel hatchback into a far more capable and responsive vehicle.

The reason for these substantial gains lies in BMW’s strategy of using the same 2.0-litre diesel engine across multiple models but limiting its output in lower-tier variants like the 116d. This means that with the right ECU calibration, we can safely extract power levels similar to those of the higher-spec 118d or even 120d, without compromising reliability. Our remap focused on optimising fuel injection, turbo boost pressure, and torque delivery, ensuring that the additional power is delivered smoothly and efficiently across the rev range.

After the remap, the BMW 116d felt like an entirely different car, with improved throttle response, stronger mid-range acceleration, and much better drivability. The additional torque made a noticeable difference, particularly in lower gears and during overtaking manoeuvres. Despite the significant performance increase, the remap did not negatively impact fuel efficiency—in fact, with more accessible power at lower RPMs, the vehicle can achieve better real-world fuel economy under normal driving conditions.
